Of all pre-Hispanic cultures, the Maya have perhaps attracted the most attention on the part of archaeologists and historians. Their cultural proliferation, their extraordinary scientific contributions, and their epic survival have given rise to eccentric myths and even supernatural connotations. With the confusing array of texts, predictions, studies, and suppositions, we need to step back and ask: What is, in fact, the essence of Maya? This first volume in the series Discover the Maya World sheds light on the features that define and frame Mayanist studies, from the earliest examples onward, leading to a detailed analysis of the identity, architecture, culture, and legacy of this fascinating people.

< p > Luis Alberto Martos López es licenciado en Arqueología por la Escuela Nacional de Antropología e Historia y doctor en Antropología por la Escuela Nacional de Antropología e Historia. Es investigador del Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia desde 1986, y desde 2004 es Director de la Dirección de Estudios Arqueológicos del INAH. Ha participado en diversos proyectos de investigación y conservación arqueológica: Palenque; Entorno Teotihuacán; Cholula; Llanura Verde Edo. de México; Playacar y Xcaret Quintana Roo; Ciudadela y Casa del Marqués del Apartado en Ciudad de México; Cerro de la Calavera e Isla del Espíritu Santo en Baja California Sur; El Pilar, Belice; Finca Rosita, El Salvador; Potrero de Payogasta en Argentina. Actualmente es director del Proyecto Arqueológico Plan de Ayutla, Chiapas, con trabajos de prospección, exploración y restauración de los edificios que conforman esta antigua ciudad maya. < br / > < br / > < /p >
