“My brilliant career” is the debut novel by Australian writer and feminist Miles Franklin. His protagonist, Sybilla Melvin, does not want to live by the harsh class laws of late nineteenth-century Australian society, but faces the need to sacrifice her own dreams for the well-being of her family. She works hard and suffers daily from her father’s alcoholism and the harsh living conditions in the Australian bush. A matrimony with a young and promising farmer Harold Beecham can solve all her problems – but will Sybil be able to sacrifice her own convictions and independence and live like everyone else? How will her ”brilliant” career continue? Miles Franklin’s novel is a great example of classical prose, however, the book raises questions which are still relevant nowadays: narrow social boundaries, stereotypes, responsibility and desire, as well as the conflict of opportunities, ambitions and social environment.
